WALKIES 11-14 NOVEMBER 2022

Whitby

A few reminders of our weekend

THE USUAL SUSPECTS...

- Charlie "New Toyota Auris" Grant
- Pete "50p-a-day, if you do you all of your chores" Smith
- Simon "What, with MY back?!" Piercy
- Dave "Peter Kay can f*ck off!" Noble
- Steve "Cold hands" Barker

Tim was unable to join us due to his Dad's worsening health - and it was with great sadness that we received the news of his passing.

R.I.P. Geoff

Friday

As Charlie had a new car, he said it was high time he drove - so Simon parked his new Tesla on Jayne's drive. (Video)

Turn the volume up to hear the space-age noise of the electric motor.

Simon & Charlie stop off at Woolley Edge services for a late lunch.

We all find the accommodation and head out into Whitby, in search of a decent pub (i.e. one that satisfied Dave's high food hygiene rating standards). The first one was a bit dubious regarding the rating but while the decision to not eat here was being arrived at, Charlie had necked his first pint.

We then moved on to The Pier Inn.

Pete choosing his meal ... and then changing his mind ... again and again ... as per usual.

The Usual Suspects

There was live music to entertain us.

The next pub was The Dolphin.

Simon looks-up ... erm, well - can anyone remember?? Perhaps he was searching for more pubs?

Later, back at the accommodation, Steve showed-off his latest hair fashion. We can only assume he was attempting to emulate anime / manga hunter, Hisoka Morow.

Saturday

The accommodation.

Oh, what a great shame - we arrived just 1 day late or else we could've joined-in, upstairs.

The fleet.

Parking permit.

Simon and Dave were desparately trying to get tickets for the newly announced Peter Kay tour - well, actualy they were attempting to just get into the queue (along with many thousands of others!) ...

Simon had a bad back and so decided to stay behind ... but made use of his time by continuing the ticketting task (with eventual success!)

We walked through Whitby and across the harbour, in search of the coastal path (the Cleveland Way) to Robin Hood's Bay.

We climbed the 199 stone steps, up to St. Mary's Church and Whitby Abbey.

Charlie spots a stonechat.

We ponder what it is we see in the shallows... could it really be the wreck of a concrete ship hull? Well, yes it can!

Lighthouse and fog horns.

We continued along the Cleveland Way ....

Refreshments stop.

By the time we reach Robin Hood's Bay the sun is setting. We meet a couple of nice girls who took this photo for us ...

Time for a well-earned drink.

We get the bus back to Whitby.

The 5.30pm kick-off is Simon's beloved Newcastle, playing at home against Chelsea. A good result ...

We fetch-in pizzas.

Steve tries to eat some gooey white stuff. (Video)

We head out to the pub and raise a glass in memory of Geoff Spate.

Best drink in the world ...

And now a short interlude where we will view a collection of fungi, encountered during the day ...

Sunday

Our mission was to walk from A to B.

Simon's back was much improved and so he joined us for the walk.

There was a Remembrance Sunday service in the town.

We walked along the harbour and down onto the beach.

We find a quietish stretch of beach to stop for our traditional two minute's silence.

The Usual Suspects

Pete & Charlie were keeping a live-update-eye on the cricket score, which ended well ...

... but Pete, who hadn't joined the rest of us up on the road, was too far away for me to share the good news with him.

Time for a drink...

The Hart Inn, where real men drink beer!

Pete's disgustingly stained hat. Time to, erm ... "retire it" perhaps, lads?

We head north and up to the cliff top.

Train coaches converted into living spaces.

Stopping to read the local information (a.k.a. a good excuse for a rest!)

Lunch.

Piercy Pot Noodle Pic

While we waited for the bus back to town (recurring theme??), we indulged in the local ice cream.

Later in the evening we head out for our pre-booked table at The Magpie Cafe, for some of the best fish & chips in the land!

The Usual Suspects

Steve was adventurous and decided to try a fish called Woof. This is what they look like ...

Monday

We have breakfast cobs, finishing up the bacon and sausages; then load-up and head home.
